Week 4 (Week 1 Board and Train) Notes and Videos

 Some observations on Ollie:

FIRST:  He was a little timid when he got here (still the same friendly puppy), as far as strange people (us), which is represented by these examples:

  1. Darting away
  2. Barking
  3. Nervous about some sounds (not really irregular sounds) by startling easily
So this work has been improving that as well, which will make him easier to handle in public around people.  I am not sure he will be all the way there (Week 3 will tell us more), but he should be much improved.

SECOND:  He can get a bit demanding for other dogs to play with him and get a little too rough.  So the impulse control exercises and handling him during socialization have improved that with the older dogs that come here.  We did not have any puppies this time around.  This will also improve his interactions with you as far as jumping and getting excited.  We have been working a lot with impulse control.  He is still friendly and wonderful, but he could piss the wrong dog off or frighten someone.

CONCLUSION:  These are all normal things that puppies rotate through as they mature.  He is still a young guy and just needs guidance and boundaries for him to grow into a calmer, more mature dog in the future.  It took a week and four days to get his performance to where we can start on the electronic collar on Thursday of this week.   The most important commands are sit, sit stay, and let's go.

THE OBEDIENCE COMMANDS HAVE ALL BEEN WORKED TO A GOAL BECAUSE WE NEED YOUR DOG TO REALLY UNDERSTAND THE COMMANDS AND PERFORM THEM WELL BEFORE WE START THE ECOLLAR WORK.  THEY ALREADY WILL BE LEARNING A NEW TYPE OF COLLAR CORRECTION THAT WILL NOT SEEM TO COME FROM THE LEASH AND OFTEN IS MISTAKEN FOR A BUG IN THEIR FUR AT FIRST.  WE DON'T WANT THE DOG STRUGGLING WITH TWO THINGS TO LEARN AT ONCE.

SIT FIRST COMMAND HAS BEEN WORKED INSIDE AND OUTSIDE, SO WE CAN DO THIS IN UNDER 3 MINUTES.

CIRCLE SIT STAYS HAVE BEEN WORKED SO THAT WE CAN GET FOUR IN A ROW. ONE-MINUTE STAYS WITH THE LEASH DROPPED INSIDE, AROUND DISTRACTIONS IN UNDER 6 MINUTES (IN THIS CASE OTHER DOGS LIKE CHEWY AND BANDIT).

SEND TO PLACE FOR 3 SETS OF 4 IN A ROW IN UNDER 5 MINUTES (ALTHOUGH THIS IS ON A NEW PLACE, THE BLANKET, INSTEAD OF THE COT SO THIS WAS HARDER):

CIRCLE PLACE FOR FOUR IN A ROW FOR 1 MINUTE IN UNDER 6 MINUTES:

LONG PLACE IS AN IMPORTANT IMPULSE CONTROL EXERCISE, AND THIS WAS ON A NEW PLACE OBJECT, THE BLANKET, SO THIS WAS HARD FOR HIM.  HE IS USUALLY ON THE COT THAT CHEWY IS ON, PLUS I ADDED IN CHEWY MOVEMENT AS A DISTRACTION.  OLLIE HAS DONE BETTER ON THIS EVEN OUTSIDE WITH CHEWY.

FINALLY, WE HAVE BEEN DOING A COUPLE OF SESSIONS OF PLAY TRAINING A DAY.  PLAY TRAINING IS HOW YOU BUILD ENGAGEMENT, AND I CAN GET THE PERFORMANCE OF OBEDIENCE COMMANDS IMPROVED.  I USE THIS IN ADDITION TO THE TRADITIONAL OBEDIENCE TRAINING AND NOT INSTEAD OF.  THEY BOTH HAVE DIFFERENT RULES AND WORK ON DIFFERENT AREAS.

ALSO, THIS COMBINES PLAY, EXERCISE, AND TRAINING ALL INTO ONE, WHICH CAN MAKE YOUR DOG MORE MANAGABLE AND CALM WHEN THEY GET THIS IN (IN ADDITION TO DOWN TIME, TRADITIONAL TRAINING TIME, AND ADVENTURES WITH THEIR OWNER):
